Let’s Take A Moment Day 27

Hi everyone.  Hope you are all well and continue to stay that way during this global health crisis we are facing.  But in addition to protecting your physical wellness, what are you doing to stay mentally healthy today?

I know we are in a serious situation, but I need a break from the gloom, doom and bullying by way of hoarding. Music has always been my refuge and watching those beautiful Italians singing to each other from their balconies reaffirmed my belief that music is the answer. So until the old normal returns, I am going to share a song I listen to that helps me escape the current state of things, if only for a few minutes each day. And if this helps anyone else, even better.

Happy Easter to all who are celebrating.  You may be spending the day in a much different way than in years past, but you can commemorate this holiday again with family and friends once we get past our safe at home status.  For a special way to observe Easter this year, tune into the online concert Andrea Bocelli is giving in Milan today at 1PM EST.  It is being advertised as a solo performance promoting “a message of love, healing and hope to Italy and the world.”  Once again, music is the answer.

In honor of his upcoming show and in celebration of Easter, the song I chose today is one of Bocelli’s duets.  He and Celine Dion each recorded solo versions of this song in 1998 for the film “Quest For Camelot”.  The two singers then performed it together in 1999 at the Oscars and again in 2000 at the Grammy Awards.  The rest, as they say, was history.  The version I am sharing today is from Bocelli’s Central Park concert in 2011.  In my opinion, it is an exquisite duet by two of the world’s best singers with an absolutely gorgeous arrangement.  Their voices fit together so perfectly, and their impassioned interpretations of the lyrics in both English and Italian just add to the stunning sound they create together.  And the lyrics could not be more fitting for this holiday and the state of  where we are:

“Lead us to a place
Guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we’ll be safe“.

Thrifted Finds Friday & A Shout Out To Galentine’s Day

This week I was finally able to cross off a bucket list item with the purchase of this vintage angler’s creel for $8.00.

I love baskets and the shape of this one has always appealed to me.  And the handle makes it easy to display.

I think the size is perfect also.  Not too big, not too small, just right.  And the square opening gives it even more interest and usefulness.

I originally wanted one for my bathroom to hold my blow dryer and hair brushes.  But now I am considering putting it on the back of my entry door or on a peg rack near the door as a landing place for keys, mail or to hold books/dvds to return to the library.

If you sew, knit or crochet you could use one of these baskets to hold all those supplies.

Now for a song (actually three songs).

Valentine’s Day is not just about romantic love.  It’s a day to honor all the love in your life.  Love of any kind is something special and should be celebrated.  Just like Thanksgiving has evolved into Friendsgiving for some, women choosing to celebrate with their favorite girls refer to this as Galantine’s Day (thank you, Queen Amy Poehler!!!)

So this first song recognizes the women we are honored to share our lives with.  On an interesting side note, at 4:04 of the video, Annie Lennox states “Equal pay, hear what we say”.  Sadly, we are still waiting for that 35 years later.

For the romantics celebrating love on any day here are two songs to help you with that, one from the male perspective and the other from the female one.  The first song combines a gorgeous string arrangement with one of the greatest lead singers to come out of Motown.  The second is by a female who has won every award and accolade because of her incredible voice, and her delivery on this song just underscores her talent.  Plus, it was written by a an incredibly prolific songwriter who gives us a piece of herself with every word she writes.

The Four Tops:  “I Believe In You And Me” (1983, written by Sandy Linzer and David Wolfert in 1982).

Celine Dion:  “If You Asked Me To” (1992, written by Diane Warren in 1989).

25 Days Of Christmas Music: Day 17

Hello, Vixens!!!  Welcome back to the countdown.

Of course the music world is made up of all types of voices:  good, bad, in-between, God awful and so on.  But I think only a few qualify as beautiful, and this man’s voice is at the top of that list.

Whether it is opera, contemporary, holiday, pop or any other type of music you can name, this man sings it with his own unique style and interpretation.  And the fact that he sings most of his songs in two languages-Italian & English-well, that is a swoon-worthy bonus.

I love so many of his duets-and he has done several with such diverse artists as Celine Dion, Reba McEntire, David Foster, Mary J. Blige, Sarah Brightman, Ed Sheeran, Luciano Pavarotti and others.  But it is when he sings his solos that I find myself most enthralled by his voice.

In 2009 he released “My Christmas” and it instantly became a permanent part of my holiday music collection.  These two songs are my favorites from that CD.

Christmas Song Countdown #8 & Goodbye To An American Hero

Hello, Vixens!!!  Welcome back to the countdown!!!

Today’s song is a no-brainer.   It honors the man who died 36 years ago.  He taught us to peacefully question what we thought was wrong with the world, to imagine it as one, that all we need is love and that being a stay at home dad is a valid life choice, even when he became one in 1975,  Of course he did so much more, but that is what we remember the most.

Oh, and he was one of the Beatles   🙂

Side note:  Did you know there is a park dedicated to John Lennon in Havana, Cuba?  It features a bronze statute of him sitting on a bench.  I cannot decide if it is creepy or cool.

Also today,  we lost another famous John.  A true hero to our country & in many respects the entire world:  John Herschel Glenn Jr.  Our first man to orbit the earth, he was a pioneer who made the dream of outer space a reality that inspired children everywhere to believe that they, too, could one day follow in his footsteps.

He quit college after the bombing of Pearl Harbor (yesterday marked the 75th anniversary of that attack) to join the military and stayed for over two decades.  He served in World War II and Korea, then became a US Senator from Ohio.  He died at the age of 95, a good long life for a man who had so much to give and inspire us with.

Thank you for being one of America’s greatest men.

Rest in peace, Colonel Glenn.
