25 Days Of Christmas 2024: Day 3

Hello, everyone. Welcome back to the countdown.

Today’s song is one I have never featured before. It was never on my favorites list but I did not dislike it, either. I just never found a place for it in my holiday music catalog. Then I stumbled upon two versions I loved so much they are being celebrated on the third day of this special music event. The first is by one of my favorite women in the universe, Dolly Parton, who included it on her 1990 album, Home For Christmas. Her polished yet simple take on it gives the track a wonderful contemporary feel that makes the listener completely forget that the song dates back to the 19th century-1857 to be exact.

Over two decades later, today’s song showed up as a duet on Rod Stewart’s first holiday album, 2012’s Merry Christmas, Baby. His partner is Mary J. Blige who brings power & passion to everything she does and this performance is no different. And her bold commanding voice juxtaposed with his soulful gravelly one combined with the elegance of the arrangement is so incredibly lovely it just pulls you in. Stewart’s album-produced by the one and only David Foster-is a great mix of beloved classics and a few other fabulous collaborations that do not disappoint. I have loved every phase of Stewart’s career and his take on The Great American Songbook & holiday tunes are no exception. I do not think there is any genre of music that he cannot make his own.

25 Days Of Christmas Music 2018: Day 13

Hi, Everybody!!!  Welcome back to the countdown.

day 13

Project found on Pinterest (original source unknown).

Today’s song was written by soul singer/songwriter Donny Hathaway (credited as Donny Pitts) & Nadine McKinnor in 1970.  It did not see chart success until two years later and has since become a holiday radio staple, especially when a film with the same name was released in 2007.

The version I chose is by a woman who has established herself as one of today’s great soul/R&B/hip hop superstars.  She has an incredible vocal range with a lot of power behind it and has recorded with megastars like Elton John, U2 & Andrea Bocelli.  She has also branched out into acting where she also excels, getting Oscar & Golden Globe nominations for her performance in 2017’s Mudbound.

In Like A Lion

March has arrived.  With a vengeance.

Here in New England, it came in with a wild wind storm driven nor’easter.   I have to admit, it was pretty mesmerizing,  And reminded me of something my grandmother used to say about this month….”In like a lion, out like a lamb”.  Now that the roar of the wind is over, we are expecting the white noise later in the week.  Not sure yet how much.  I know so many of you have spring fever already, but I am relishing these last few official weeks of winter.  Call me crazy  🙂

Did you catch the Oscars last night???  They did a nice tribute to the military with a montage of many of the war movies Hollywood created in the last nine decades.  I found it hilarious and fitting they brought back Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway to present Best Picture after last year’s mix-up.  And I was sooooo happy Frances McDormand won.  I loved how her unity speech rallied the women in the audience, too!!!  I am really enjoying this movement of women supporting women.  It’s time we take it back from the mean girls and the others who strive to divide, break or silence us.

And it was so great to see some old school Hollywood at the show, especially since it was the 90th Academy Awards.  How beautiful did Eva Marie Saint look?

And how handsome was Christopher Plummer?

How about Rita Moreno wearing the same dress last night…..

Laurie Metcalf:

I really wanted Laurie Metcalf to win for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Lady Bird” (great movie, btw).  I have been a big fan of hers since she played Jackie Harris on “Roseanne“.  And that reminds me-are you as psyched as I am for the re-boot of that series starting later this month?  I was such a fan so I cannot wait.  If it is half as good as the “Will & Grace” revival, I am IN!!!

For this week’s song, I chose Mary J. Blige’s Oscar nominated “Mighty River” from “Mudbound“.  Her voice is beautiful and incredibly powerful, just like the lyrics she co-wrote:

“Life is a teacher, time is a healer,
And I’m a believer like a river wild.
Ego’s a killer, greed is a monster
But love is stronger, stronger than them all.”

So how are you enjoying March so far???

25 Days Of Christmas Music: Day 17

Hello, Vixens!!!  Welcome back to the countdown.

Of course the music world is made up of all types of voices:  good, bad, in-between, God awful and so on.  But I think only a few qualify as beautiful, and this man’s voice is at the top of that list.

Whether it is opera, contemporary, holiday, pop or any other type of music you can name, this man sings it with his own unique style and interpretation.  And the fact that he sings most of his songs in two languages-Italian & English-well, that is a swoon-worthy bonus.

I love so many of his duets-and he has done several with such diverse artists as Celine Dion, Reba McEntire, David Foster, Mary J. Blige, Sarah Brightman, Ed Sheeran, Luciano Pavarotti and others.  But it is when he sings his solos that I find myself most enthralled by his voice.

In 2009 he released “My Christmas” and it instantly became a permanent part of my holiday music collection.  These two songs are my favorites from that CD.
