Christmas Song Of The Day #6

Hello, Vixens!!!  With 10 days to go until the big day, are you on track?  Holding it all together?  Covered in flour from all the cookies you are baking?  Wherever you are on your road to Christmas, take a well deserved break with another holiday tune.

Christmas songs have been covered by almost everyone who’s anyone  for decades now if not longer, so for someone to take one and make it his or her own is a rare feat indeed.  But when the cover version is by Ray Charles, a rare feat is an everyday occurrence.

Whether you like his interpretation because you are a fan of the Genius himself, or it reminds you of when Harry and Sally carried her Christmas tree home in the falling snow, or of James Caan’s softer side in “Elf”, this holiday classic is a treat for the whole family.

It is Ray Charles with Winter Wonderland.

Enjoy!!!

Christmas Song Of The Day #5

Hello there, Vixens!!!  Hope you are all doing well!!!  Is it cold where you live?  Here in my part of New England, it feels more like September than December!!!  But I am still keeping my fingers crossed that somehow we will have a white Christmas, even if it’s only a dusting of snow!!!  🙂  While I wait, let me share another of my favorite Christmas songs with you.

Like a lot of people, most of the very warm memories I have from my childhood and those Christmases are about my family.  My maternal grandmother was a big fan of the King of Cool himself, Dean Martin (did I mention I am from an Italian family???)  “Dino”, as he was affectionately nicknamed, did it all:  he was a singer, an actor (he was in one of my favorite “Airport” movies), half of a comedy duo (his partner was Jerry Lewis), hosted great TV specials and those hilarious celebrity roasts!!!

There are so many songs of his that I love:  “That’s Amore“, “Volare“, “Everybody Loves Somebody“, “Return To Me” and “Non Dimenticar” to name a few.  But I love his Christmas recordings just as much.  My favorite?  “Let It Snow“.  It’s fun, easy to sing along to, and it’s Dean.  Enough said (or written, as the case is LOL).  So for my Grandma Mary and all of you, enjoy!!!

Christmas Songs Of The Day #4

Hello, Vixens!!!  How are all of you doing?  Can you believe we are less than two weeks away from the big day?  It certainly is going by fast.  So before we blink and have it pass us all by, let’s take a moment to celebrate some more amazing sounds of the season.

It is no secret that I am a H-U-G-E fan of Bruce Springsteen.  He just announced several tour dates for next year which will come to my area just in time for my birthday.  So, it is fair to say Christmas came early for me!!!  But this season is never complete for me until I hear his versions of two Christmas classics.

The first is a throw back to the innocence of childhood and its cautionary message “to be good for goodness sake”.  The original version comes from one of the three  Christmas specials I MUST watch every single year:  “A Charlie Brown Christmas” (see that here), “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” and this one.  It features a beautiful wedding scene under “the first Christmas Trees” and is probably what made me fall in love with the beauty of this season before I knew how truly special it also was.  And as soon as you hear the music, you cannot help but sing along to “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town”.

Springsteen’s version is just as infectious and features some funky saxophone playing by another Big Man, Clarence Clemmons (miss you, Clarence!!!)

The Boss’ other holiday gem is just as special.  “Merry Christmas, Baby”  is a rocking, bluesy, jazzy and romantic way to celebrate the season with that special someone.  It is also perfect for singing along to while you are alone in your car, or while decorating the tree with some of your closest friends or sharing a holiday meal with family.  For me, it’s all those things and another reminder of why I love Bruce!!!

Enjoy!!!

Christmas Song Of The Day #3

Hello, Vixens!!!  How are all of you lovelies today?  I hope you are all taking the time to pamper yourselves  a little each day while you rush around to accomplish all the items on your to do list.  If not, why not take a moment now to do so with a great Christmas song?

Did you know that today would have been Francis Albert “Frank” Sinatra’s 100th birthday?  However you think of him, whether as Ole Blue Eyes, the Chairman of the Board, as a member of the Rat Pack, an actor, a crooner, the other singer from New Jersey (OK, maybe that’s just me), Nancy’s dad or just Frank, his voice and legacy are undeniably a part of American culture that is unsurpassed.

One of my all time favorite Christmas songs is “Oh Come All Ye Faithful” and Sinatra’s take on it, with a beautiful choir accompanying him and released under its original Latin title-“Adeste Fideles“-is beautiful.

Enjoy!!!

Christmas Song Of The Day #2

Hello, Vixens!!!  How are all of you today?  Frazzled?  Harried?  Weary?  Well, I hope not!!!  ‘Tis the season, remember?  Take a moment for you.  Put your feet up, close your eyes and indulge in a great Christmas song.

Have you seen the Peanuts movie yet?  If not and you are a fan, go now!!!  The tagline for the movie-“The friends you grew up with but never outgrew”-describes my relationship with the gang perfectly.  They were my best friends when I was a kid, and decades later I am proud to say I still cherish each and every one of them.  And what would this season be without watching “A Charlie Brown Christmas”?

Well this year, our favorite holiday special turns the big 5-0.  That’s right, 50!!!  Fifty years of “I never thought it was such a bad little tree”, of Charlie Brown’s disdain over the commercialism of the holiday, of the dance, of Linus telling us the meaning of Christmas, of the gang decorating the little tree, wishing Charlie Brown a Merry Christmas and singing an adorable version of “Hark The Herald Angels Sing”.

But my favorite song from this iconic special?  “Christmastime Is Here“.  Nothing defines Christmas for me like this special and this song.  Thank you, Charles M. Schulz, Vince Guaraldi and Lee Mendelson for this gem of a special.

Enjoy!!!

Christmas Song Of The Day #1

Hello, Vixens!!!  How are your Christmas plans coming along?  Are you getting all your shopping/baking/decorating/celebrating/wrapping done?  I try to adhere to a less is more approach to this season (operative word here is “try”), but it always includes some great music.

So while you are knee deep in holiday preparations, give yourself a well deserved break by pouring a mug of your favorite beverage, grabbing a Christmas cookie or candy cane as a snack, and indulge in the sounds of the season.

Today’s song was featured in one of my all-time favorite movies, holiday or otherwise, “Love Actually“.  It is by a man who, as of today, has been sadly & unbelievably gone from this world for 48 years.  But thankfully, the phenomenal gift of his voice stays with us in such classics like “(Sittin’ On ) The Dock of The Bay“, “Try A Little Tenderness“, “Shake” and “I Can’t Turn You Loose“.  Please note that I do not own the rights to the music or the videos.  I am just sharing my favorites and some great performances from the man himself 🙂 .

Here is Otis Redding’s sublime rendition of “White Christmas“.

Enjoy!!!

“Imagine All The People Living Life In Peace…..”

“You may say I’m a dreamer,

But I’m not the only one.

I hope some day you’ll join us

And the world will live as one.”

Imagine by John Lennon (1971)

Thirty five years ago the world was shocked to learn John Lennon was killed outside the entrance to his home in the Dakota Building in New York City.  Part of why the news was so startling was not only because Lennon was a Beatle, but because after all his fame, music and notoriety, he was an icon of peace.  And his killer was a mentally ill man who was able to get his hands on a gun despite his unbalanced status.

A few days after Lennon’s death, one of the New York papers ran a drawing of a smoking gun with the caption-“And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree there will be an answer”-from “Let It Be”.  That was December 1980.

Less than four months later, another mentally ill individual attempted to assassinate President Reagan and permanently disabled Press Secretary James Brady in the process.   That event led to one of the country’s first gun laws with the passing of the Brady Bill.

Nearly three years ago, 20 children and 6 adults were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.  Twenty-two years ago yesterday 6 people were killed in the Long Island (NY) Railroad massacre.

In the years since places like Columbine, Aurora, Virginia Tech, Casas Adobes, Northern Arizona University, Texas Southern University, Umpqua Community College, Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, UC Santa Barbara and too many others have experienced mass shootings.  While some are acts of terrorism, like the ones in San Bernardino last week along with the those in Paris last month, the majority of the shootings which occur in this country are not.

Wherever you stand on the gun issue, we all must be able to agree that when a church, an elementary school, a college campus or a movie theatre becomes a  shooting gallery, something has to change.  Something that keeps the guns out of the hands of those too ill to understand the effects of their actions, while allowing those who are of sound mind and body the right to keep and bear arms.  Because these mass shootings cannot continue to be routine events.  They cannot and should not be our legacy.

We have got to be better than this.

Just imagine for a moment that we are.

Peace.
