Hello, everyone. Welcome back to the countdown.

This is the third year in a row that this song has been a feature here. That means it has been part of the countdown since it was released in 2023. It is hard to find new spins on old songs, especially for traditional Christmas carols that have been around forever. But the Lumineers made this their own and despite how much I love the fast pace of this tune in its original form (especially when Bill Murray sings it as Frank Cross in 1988’s “Scrooged”), this stunning cover is now my favorite version of this song.

25 Days Of Christmas Music 2024: Day 14

Hello, everyone. Welcome back to the countdown.

Day 14

Today’s song made my list last year which is when it was first released. The origins date back to the 16th century as a Welsh traditional Christmas carol that had English lyrics added to it in the mid 19th century. So for over a century this has been a classic festive sing along style song. Until 2023 when The Lumineers decided to make it all their own. And it is such an inspired original take that by the second or third line I found I did not even miss the sing along part. I just got lost in the inventiveness of this sparse yet eloquent acoustic interpretation which elevated this song from a carol to a classic in under two & half minutes.

If you are someone who looks forward to new versions of traditional Christmas songs, today’s pick is for you. And what a sublime track it is. It comes from The Lumineers who had their breakthrough hit in 2012 with “Ho Hey” from their self-titled debut. Their holiday recording is in support of Backline, a nonprofit organization that assists music industry professionals with resources to help with mental health and wellness. The beautiful sparse rendition fits Wesley Schultz’s voice perfectly to Jeremiah Fraites simple but elegant piano track. I find it absolutely stunning.
